NASCARR Summer Internship Program
Applications for the Summer Research Internship are also open! This internship, which is supported in part through NASCARR, provides hands-on exposure to enrolled or recently graduated undergraduate, graduate, or medical students. All interns complete a mentored scholarly project, which they present the results of at the end of their internship. Students also received clinical shadowing opportunities and attend weekly educational seminars for professional development.
This internship is full-time, largely in-person, and lasts eight weeks during the summer. A $3,800 stipend will be provided for successful applicants selected for the internship.
Background
The Network for Advancing Sex Chromosome Aneuploidy Research Readiness (NASCARR) is pleased to support a Research Internship for trainees interested in learning more about sex chromosome aneuploidies and pediatric clinical research.
Sex chromosome aneuploidies are genetic conditions in which an extra or missing X or Y chromosome is present. 1 in 400 babies are born with an extra or missing sex chromosome, but only a handful of centers around the world are conducting research to learn more about these conditions and how best to care for them. These centers apply multiple methodologies (retrospective and prospective observational studies, translational science, intervention trials, secondary data analyses, surveys, qualitative methods, etc.) to answer important clinical questions with the goal of improving patient outcomes in these genetic conditions. Major research endeavors these centers are supporting include the Inspiring New Science in Guiding Healthcare in Turner Syndrome (INSIGHTS) Registry and the Generating Advancements in Longitudinal Analysis in X & Y Chromosome Variations (GALAXY) Registry, which collect medical history, survey data, and blood samples from individuals with sex chromosome aneuploidies. Interns will have the opportunity to work with a NASCARR site to complete a project related to these registries and learn about sex chromosome aneuplodies.

Stipend
$3,800 stipend will be provided for successful applicants selected for the internship. Housing and transportation are the responsibility of the intern.

This internship will largely be in-person. Several sites are available:

Eligibility
- Be enrolled in or recently graduated from undergraduate, graduate, or medical school
- Interest in learning more about pediatric clinical research in sex chromosome aneuploidies
- Possess a "can-do" attitude and a customer service orientation
- Self-motivated with a desire for personal growth
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
- Fluency in using Microsoft Office Suite products (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Teams)
- Ability to work in-person, including passing a background check and necessary immunizations
Applicants must be available from June 1 through July 31st for in-person work at 40 hours per week.
Although not required, this internship is most valuable for trainees interested in careers in medicine, behavioral health, genetic counseling, public health, biomedical or psychosocial research, or education. Preference will be given to individuals from communities that are underrepresented in medicine or those that bring diversity to the healthcare field.
